Scenic Byways are alternative routes visitors can take to enhance their driving experience. The Scenic Byways program replaces the old Scenic Highways program. Scenic Byways are designated based on the existence of at least one of six Intrinsic Qualities: Scenic, Historic, Cultural, Natural, Recreational and Archeological.
The Scenic Byway Program allows for three levels of designation - State Scenic Byway
(Ohio),
National Scenic Byway and All American Roads. All American Roads are reserved for those roads that are destinations unto themselves. In all cases, designation as a State Scenic Byway is the first step.
